Tawkon says that the way it works is by collecting and extracting data from your phone, such as: network type, band-GSM, UMTS, CDMA, channel, signal strength, and phone model. Then the app calculates the phones radiation level and hence the user exposure SAR (Specific Absorption Rate, a universal measure for the amount of radiation being absorbed by the user). After this process Tawkon (Talk On) will send an alert when levels are detected as being to high.
They have recently decided to launch a Japanese specific app that would elaborate on the premise by providing other alerts to the user. NoCamels indicates that real-time information would be gathered by a smartphone to alert users when radiation levels are high, and also to identify radiation hotspots in their immediate area. Tawkon said that its aim is to increase awareness of radiation as well as instruct on ways to decrease radiation, such as using an earpiece.
There are phones in Japan that actually measure the radiation around you, similar to a Geiger counter, however they dont measure their own radiation, says Gil Friedlander, CEO, in an interview with The Next Web. We see this as an opportunity to provide phone users that are concerned about non-ionizing radiation the kind that emits from your phone with a means to monitor their exposure and change their habits accordingly.
